French Ledgers

These paintings are on 400-year-old pages from a journal belonging to a town in France that no longer exists.  The information contained includes harvests, debts to the feudal lord, births, deaths, boundaries:  a snapshot of the abundance of the town at specific points in time.  Some of the text can still be understood by native French speakers, but much is too old to understand.

Over these pages I painted small bird studies.  A group of eight of them hang in the boardroom of Invesco, in Houston.  They liked the idea of vibrant life amidst a record of daily life and economics.
