Collages Over 30 years, I have accumulated files of images: photos, drawings, clippings, Xeroxes, postcards, diagrams, etc., to use as reference material when creating paintings and giving college lectures. Some of the images have shown up in specific paintings, but most remained in files. Since I am blind in one eye, I rely on photos I take or printed images to aid me in compositions. Collapsing three-dimensions into a two-dimensional image, I try to re-create a reality that resembles my monocular experience. That experience, my world, might not be logical to the viewer. In the fall of 2016, after a retrospective in Houston and in my hometown of Chicago, and after retiring from teaching for 25 years, I started sorting through these files. All the recurring images in my art had multiple, thick files: amaryllis, birds, sacred geometry, blood, keys, snakes, butterflies, shells and moons. There was old sheet music from my mom and grandmother, antique prints destined for repurpose, and torn magazine pages with color combinations I loved. Some files had portions of my old prints or other works on paper that were unfinished or damaged. A few prized, old art magazines such as FMR, which I received as a gift upon graduation with a MFA 30 years ago, also met with the scissors and razor. I watched my grandpa prune roses. I watched my mom pick cherries and apples off trees in our backyard in Chicago. I made summer money by cutting grass for several neighbors. I had plants in my basement bedroom window in high school and later in my college dorm. Every spring I would plant geraniums, petunias, and vinca in my gramma’s balcony planters while she played piano. As an adult I have had vegetable gardens, herb gardens, and flower gardens. I drive by my former houses and apartments to visit trees I planted. When I taught college art courses as an adjunct, I also did landscaping for a landlord with several apartment buildings, and I would move bushes and saplings from one property to another and start cuttings in my apartment to plant at his locations. I shared the house on Avenue B with two women and it was just a few blocks from the State School for the Blind. Between the street and the sidewalk, I dug up the grass and put in a vegetable garden. There were also zinnias and cosmos down the center. My cat—named Cowface—shared the black and white markings of a Holstein. Cowface would lie on the sidewalk in the sun eyeing butterflies hunting nectar, often too sleepy to play chase after napping on the warm concrete. Those who trained students on how to cane made it a habit to walk in front of our house to teach the blind what happens when they encounter a grumpy ball of fur while tapping. Cowface would always think it was a game, and the students would get to a point where they realized what was going on. Sometimes, a student who had already been by would expect Cowface and tap the cane until he came off the porch to teach his lesson. Those canes gave the blind courage to explore new places and acted as magic wands to create wonderful journeys. My modus operandi was to get into a rental car and start driving. At a certain point, I would approach a stoplight or stop sign out in the middle of nowhere and ask the question, “Is it in my best and highest good to turn left, right, or go straight ahead?” I’d always get a clear response with muscle testing or something clairaudient. He was thought to be the oldest documented living land animal at the time of his death. British sailors brought him from the Seychelle Islands to India in 1875. While he thrived for over 250 years, the other three that came with him died early on. Addwaita means “the one and only” in the Bengali language. I read about the tortoise in the Houston Chronicle one morning in my studio, buried in a weekly list of nature news. Reading Addwaita’s biography/obituary, reminded me of all my friends that had died of AIDS. I remembered several years earlier being told by my doctor that I needed to get all my affairs in order - that were no new drugs for me to try. But I lived long enough to be in pharmaceutical studies that offered hope and save mine and many lives. So I felt a connection to this tortoise I had never met who outlived his fellow captives. He inspired me. His story made it easier to let go of survivor guilt. Skydiving A fortieth birthday is a big deal, but my sister’s cancer had aggressively returned after several years in remission. So Mary Pat’s 40th was both a milestone and a bittersweet celebration. All she wanted to do was jump out of an airplane, high above her home in Denver. She couldn’t find the courage to do it alone, and secretly signed me up to jump with her. A few months after her May birthday, I flew to Denver, peering out the window on my flight, thinking she was crazy. Had the cancer spread to her brain already? My only memory of skydiving had been a summer in the late 70’s when I was a counselor in LaSalle-Peru, Illinois at Camp Claretknoll. The campers during the session that included the 4th of July were severely mentally handicapped. We went by bus to watch the town’s fireworks and concert in a huge park. While everyone picnicked, a huge X was placed in a clearing and several men jumped from a plane with US flags trailing them. One parachute didn’t open, and the man quickly landed not far from our group, creating a sizable divot in the earth. The whole town gasped and cried, but the campers jumped up and clapped and screamed in joy, understanding the spectacle as entertainment. Sometimes I'd sneak a sip of wine before a 6:30 AM service. I used a red funnel to fill the gas tank on my dad’s lawnmower when I cut neighbors’ lawns in the summers of grammar school. Ten bucks for the small front yards and twenty for the bigger back yards. During high school I filled sauce bottles using plastic funnels at an Arby’s one summer, where I sliced the meat (and the tip of one finger). As a college waiter at Bristol’s I filled oil and vinegar bottles through metal funnels. I collect funnels. I don’t know when it started. Probably the mid 80’s. I fell in love with them in the Lithography Studio at the University of Texas at Austin. In that printshop, it seemed like everything went through a funnel: lithotene, acid, gum arabic, acetone, grit, water. There was an unspoken rule that if you were filling one empty container, you filled them all. There were also giant barrels of gum and lithotene on a loading dock that required a giant funnel to fill a smaller container, which would then get carried inside so I could fill the containers at each press with yet another size funnel. He had a 4-inch ring with dozens of keys for every door in every building on that square Chicago city block. During my last year in graduate school in Urbana, Ill, the university had decided to tear down two buildings to make way for something new. They spent weeks and weeks emptying the old rooms. I used found objects in my art; while they were clearing the buildings out, I waited for the perfect time to get inside through a window to find treasure. I left with 2 large, labeled boards with all the keys to all the doors in the buildings. They wouldn’t be needing those anymore: the keys were featured in a few of the works in my MFA thesis exhibit. When I first moved to Houston, my friend Kevin invited me to visit another friend of his. The old woman’s husband had died years ago and she kept his ashes in a shoebox in the house. I broke my left arm and right wrist and shattered the bones in my nose to where they were sticking out through the skin. When I came to, I drove myself (I have a hard time asking for help) to a nearby 24-hour Medi-clinic. The woman at the desk ran through the lobby screaming at me not to bleed on the carpet and go to a real emergency room. That was when I knew it was bad. At the ER, no one would sit next to me in the waiting room. A friend was driving over to meet me as the adrenaline was wearing off and the pain was setting in. Two EMT’s scurried by with a senior citizen on a gurney, but one looked at me, stopped, and declared, “Sir, I’m sorry, but your modeling career is over”. He had a nurse bring me an ice pack and towel to hold over my nose, but neither hand could accomplish that pose. The nose bones were so traumatized that the ER doctor decided to stuff all the bone fragments under the skin and suture it closed, to allow the bones and tissue to heal. The plan was that in 6 months, someone would do surgery to put it back together. Diagnosed with blindness in my right eye, I had a distinctly unique way of looking at my surroundings, seeing the world as two-dimensional. I started drawing birds as a kid on a scrappy easel nailed high up in a tree or sitting next to my severely handicapped sister at the kitchen table, drawing with her crayons the animals whose names she screamed. I still paint birds and other creatures, now from photos or quick sketches I’ve done while volunteering at the Wildlife Center of Texas and out in nature. My travel, illnesses and mentors led me to “sacred geometry,” the symbolic and sacred patterns found in nature, which provides the structure for my compositions. In my acrylic paintings, I add creatures floating on top of these designs of lines, shapes, color, or keys. On antique prints by naturalists documenting discoveries of new species of plants and animals, I add geometric designs based on new discoveries in quantum physics.
